Who is Vermithor in House of the Dragon?

The Game of Thrones spin-off series House of the Dragon has surprised audiences with its intense narrative, full of political intrigue and epic battles. One of the big expectations is always the introduction of more dragons into the storyline, and among them stands out Vermithor, known as “The Bronze Fury.” This imposing dragon, once the steed of King Jaehaerys I Targaryen, Rhaenyra’s grandfather, promises to play a crucial role in the Targaryen civil war, known as the Dance of the Dragons.

However, at the start of the series, Vermithor is riderless, creating a mystery as to who will be next to tame him. The dragon was briefly introduced in the season one finale, when Daemon Targaryen found him and sang him an ancient song in High Valyrian. Now, as the war intensifies, Vermithor will be a powerful ally in the fight for the Iron Throne, and his story promises to have a profound impact on events to come.

It is worth noting that the following content may contain spoilers (plot revelations).

Vermithor Features and History

Vermithor is no ordinary dragon. Considered one of the largest living dragons in Westeros, he was the third largest in his prime, trailing only Balerion the Black Dread and Vhagar. Nearly a hundred years old during the events of House of the Dragon, Vermithor is described as massive, covered in bronze scales, earning him the nickname “The Bronze Fury.” His age and combat experience make him a fearsome opponent, but he is also a dragon accustomed to the presence of humans, making him easier to interact with riders.

During the reign of Jaehaerys I Targaryen, Vermithor played an important role, serving as the king’s steed during years of peace and prosperity. Jaehaerys and his queen, Alysanne, traveled north, reaching the Wall, where Vermithor and the dragon Silverwing refused to fly over the land beyond the frozen fortress. There are indications that this reluctance was linked to the presence of the White Walkers in the far North, showing the dragons’ connection to the mystical forces of the world.

With Jaehaerys dead and the years passing, Vermithor was left riderless, living in seclusion until he was rediscovered by Daemon. His reintroduction to the series marks a turning point in the civil war, as his alliance with Rhaenyra Targaryen could change the course of events.

Comparison with other dragons

In terms of size, Vermithor is one of the largest dragons in Westeros, surpassed only by Balerion and Vhagar in their prime. To give you an idea, Vhagar is described as half the size of Balerion, who was the largest dragon ever seen in Westeros. While Vermithor’s exact size is not clearly defined, he would have ranked third during the time of the Dance of the Dragons, just behind Vhagar.

After the death of the wild dragon Cannibal, whose exact size is uncertain, Vermithor takes the position of the second largest living dragon at the time of the civil war. This makes him a vital force in the struggle for the throne, especially considering his combat experience and ferocity.

Vermithor’s Fate in War

Vermithor takes part in the crucial moments of the Dance of the Dragons, in particular at the First Battle of Tumbleton, where he fights alongside Rhaenyra. However, after the betrayal of Hugh Hammer, the dragon changes sides and begins to fight for the Greens, led by Aegon II. This moment marks a turning point in the war, showing the instability of alliances and the complexity of the conflicts between the Targaryens.

In the Second Battle of Tumbleton, Vermithor is once again the protagonist, but his rider, Hugh Hammer, attempts to proclaim himself king and ends up being assassinated. Riderless, Vermithor faces Addam Velaryon’s dragon Seasmoke, and both die from their wounds, marking the end of one of the greatest dragons in Westeros.

Vermithor is one of the most powerful and iconic creatures in House of the Dragon. His role in the series not only deepens the history of the Targaryen family, but also adds layers of complexity to the civil war to come.
