Fans Are Angry With ‘The Crow’ Remake: Is It Dishonoring Brandon Lee’s Memory?

“The Crow,” starring Brandon Lee, marked a milestone in the 90s. The film, based on a comic book series, tells a tale of revenge. Eric Draven and his fiancée are murdered, but Draven returns to life to avenge her death.

“The Raven” was an iconic film: Brandon Lee died making it

One of the reasons why this film became legendary was the death of its protagonist during filming. Brandon was filming an action sequence where, by mistake, the bullet he was shot with was real. This tragic story gave more power to the enigmatic character of “The Crow”.

The 1994 film was a tribute to Lee, so the announcement of a remake was met with criticism. The project for the remake had been in the works since 2008, but multiple changes of actors and director had to be made for it to finally work.

In the end, the one chosen to play Eric Draven was Bill Skarsgård, known for his performance as Pennywise the clown in ‘IT’.

In “The Raven” (1994), the relationship between Eric and his fiancee is told only through flashbacks, so the big innovation in the remake was to depict the relationship in the present tense. This is to give more depth to the love between the protagonists.

In addition to the plot changes, the 2024 version promised to have a darker aesthetic, highlighting the gothic aspects of the original film.

“El Cuervo” 2024 did not meet the expectations of the fans

A week after its release, the film was poorly received by critics and audiences. Despite its lengthy development process and $50 million budget, the film grossed just $5 million in its opening weekend in the United States.

Critics consider it a disappointment, pointing out that it does not capture the essence of the original 1994 film. Additionally, actors from the original film, such as Sofia Cena and Rochelle Davis, have expressed their displeasure, seeing it as disrespecting Brandon Lee’s legacy . .

Alex Proyas, director of the original film, wrote a text on Facebook saying:

I’m sure the cast and crew had really good intentions, as we all do in any film. So it pains me to say more about this, but I think the fan reaction says it all. “The Raven” is not just a movie. Brandon Lee died making it and it was completed as a testament to his brilliance and his tragic loss. It is his legacy. That’s the way it should be.
