The wizarding world has thousands of years of history that we still don’t know about, but thanks to the little we’ve been shown we know all the power that dark magic can give a wizard or witch.
Below we present the 10 best epic villains that Harry Potter or Newt Scamander faced at some point in their adventures.
#10 Vinda Rosier
Vinda Rosier is Gellert Grindelwald’s right hand. She is a ruthless witch, but has a strong faith in the dark wizard.
Although we haven’t seen much of her, we know from her position among Grindelwald’s followers that she is a powerful witch and willing to do anything for her master.
#9 Barty Crouch Jr.
Barty Crouch is a rather underrated villain, as he single-handedly managed to kidnap Moody and fool the entire Hogwarts school – including Dumbledore – for a year.
He planned everything so that Harry could win the Triwizard tournament and prepared the portkey to get the “boy who lived” in front of Voldemort, all under the nose of the Minister for Magic and the most powerful wizard of the century.
#8 Dementors
Dementors are not wizards, they are magical creatures, but they have what it takes to be considered evil. For years they were the guardians of Azkaban, the wizarding prison, where they sucked happiness and hope from all the inmates.
When that wasn’t enough, they joined Voldemort, where they served as a formidable army capable of stealing the souls of those who stood before them.
#7 Snape
There are many arguments for and against Severus Snape being considered evil, but to be honest most of his actions were not very correct.
Snape made Harry Potter’s life impossible throughout his school life due to his resentment of his father, but at the same time protected him due to his obsession with his mother. Regardless of his side, Snape was brilliant and was either a powerful ally or a formidable foe.
#6 Credence Barebones
Credence is an unintended villain of the epic, after Mary Barebone’s mistreatment turns him into a darkling, a phenomenon that occurs when a wizard is forced to suppress his magic.
As dark. Credence became a dangerous wizard and all indications are that he joined forces with Grindelwald to defeat Albus Dumbledore.
#5 Dolores Umbridge
She’s probably the weakest witch on the list, but her strength doesn’t come from her magical abilities. Thanks to her connections in the Ministry of Magic, she gets almost anything she wants, from firing teachers to becoming Headmistress of Hogwarts.
Umbridge’s cruelty and thirst for power seems to know no bounds, and she has no problem using unforgivable curses or serving Voldemort.
#4 Fenrir Greyback
Most werewolves stay hidden for fear of starting an Auror hunt against them. But that wasn’t the case with Fenrir Greyback, who always seemed to want to maximize his victim count as much as possible.
He was responsible for turning Remus Lupine into a werewolf, and when he lingered, all the wizards went into hiding to avoid falling into his clutches. His favorite victims were women and children, so this villain was almost as despised and feared as Voldemort.
#3 Bellatrix Lestrange
She is Voldemort’s most loyal and powerful follower, she is a crazy witch who loves the dark arts and likes torturing other wizards and Muggles.
His favorite curse is the Cruciatus, with which he inflicts excruciating pain on his victims. When he gets bored, he finishes them off with an Avada Kedavra.
She is a very skilled duelist, so for a long time it was believed that only Voldemort himself could defeat her, although we later learned that this was an exaggeration.
#2 Gellert Grindelwald
For decades he was considered the most powerful dark wizard of all time. He is a dark wizard with an electrifying charisma and uses it to gain the trust of his followers and manipulate them into fighting for him.
He was one of the most powerful Elder Wand wielders, and if it wasn’t for Dumbledore, he might have conquered the entire world.
#1 Voldemort
He was the dark wizard who far surpassed what Grindelwald did, and even had a very even duel against Dumbledore.
Voldemort was the only wizard who managed to return from the dead, in addition to possessing other powers such as creating inferis, flight, and other powerful curses.
The only weak point he had ended up with was his downfall: an overwhelming confidence in his own power and a disdain for the power of love in magic.
