In December 2023, rumors emerged about the departure of Kevin Costner of the series. The actor, who is one of the protagonists, would be focusing on directing his western film Horizonreleased in two parts. In June, Costner confirmed that he would not return to the series, following the poor performance of Horizon: An American Saga – Part 1 at the box office.
Additionally, in September, Costner threatened to sue the producers of Yellowstoneduring a child support hearing related to his divorce from Christine Baumgartner. He claimed that he was still due $12 million for the second half of season five due to a “pay or play” clause. This means that even if production is canceled, delayed, or if the actor is let go before filming, he will still receive the amount agreed upon in the contract.
Meanwhile, Paramount is already planning for the future after Yellowstonewith the creation of a spinoff, entitled The Madisonwith Patrick J. Adams, Matthew Fox, Elle Chapman and Beau Garrett in the cast. There is also the possibility of a surprise sixth season, focusing on the characters of Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser.
