Is ‘Infinity’ the ‘Superbad’ of the new generations? Differences and similarities

Netflix’s ‘Infinity’ has come as a surprise due to its close resemblance to Seth Rogen’s classic film ‘Superbad’. How are both films similar and how are they different?

What is “Infinity”?

“Infinity” is a Netflix youth comedy directed by brothers Dave and John Chernin. The story follows four teenagers as they face their first week of high school and prepare for the biggest party of the year.

The story centers on Benj, played by Mason Thames (of “Black Telephone” fame). Benji is in love with Bailey (Isabella Ferreira), his older sister’s best friend. This is mixed with the wishes of his group of friends to improve his social standing at school, which creates a series of situations that range from the funny to the difficult.

The Chernins tried to combine the typical humor of the genre with moments of teenage tenderness, so they focused on the boys’ misadventures as they try to navigate a night of chaos.

The resemblance to the iconic ‘Superbad’

Superbad is a 2007 American comedy film directed by Greg Mottola. The story follows two friends, Seth and Evan (based on Seth Rogen and Evan Goldenberg), who are about to graduate from high school.

The duo plan to attend a party to get alcohol and girls for the first time, hoping to fit in with the popular group. The film is known for its humor and exaggerated situations.

The Differences Within ‘Infinity’ and ‘Superbad’

Although both films revolve around the promise of a great party, the films, like the series and the music, are updated according to their context. “Infinity” is no exception, as it is set in 2024, while “Superbad” is set in the 2000s, which is reflected in the fashion, technology and cultural references of the time.

The humor is also different: in “Superbad” it’s more crude and blunt, with many situations bordering on the absurd and politically incorrect. “Infinity” seeks to address more tenderness and a more diverse cast in terms of ethnicity and gender, showing greater inclusion.
