In recent months, the French public has discovered a real passion for literary adaptations for cinema. This year, Pier Nini’s The Count of Monte Cristo was a triumph, with over 6 million entries already recorded. Before that, other films inspired by the novels of Alexandre Dumas claimed this feat.
Two movies for the price of one
As of last year (April 5, 2023), the first part of the adventures of the three musketeers (subtitled d’Artagnan) gathered almost 4.5 million people in cinemas. This feature film was shot simultaneously with a second opus titled Milady and was released a few months later (December 13).
This blockbuster, which brings amazing films back to the fore, is based on a prestigious cast. The main role of d’Artagnan was given to François Civil, and the three musketeers are played by Vincent Cassel (Athos), Romain Duris (Aramis) and Pio Marmay (Portos).
Eric Ruff plays the role of Cardinal Richelieu, and Eva Green plays the poisonous Milady de Winter. Finally, King Louis XIII is played by Louis Garrel and Lina Khudri lends her features to Constance Bonacieux in this new adaptation directed by Martin Bourboulon.
The duo behind these two projects
Although these are two different projects, obviously not the multiverse of Alexandre Dumas in cinema, there is no doubt that the success of The Three Musketeers heralded the success of The Count of Monte Cristo. In addition to the friendship that binds François Civil and Pierre Nin, the two films share the duo of Alexandre de la Patellier and Mathieu Delaporte.
The tandem, which became known to the general public thanks to the adaptation of the play Le Prénom, appears in the credits of two adaptations of Alexandre Dumas. First, the screenwriters of two parts of “The Three Musketeers”, then the screenwriters and directors of “The Count of Monte Cristo”.
