After Inglourious Basterds, it’s time for Monument Men. Unlike the soldiers in Quentin Tarantino’s film, under the command of George Clooney, they are not trying to massacre the Nazis, but to recover art pieces stolen by German troops during World War II. A high-risk mission that forces its members to operate between the lines…
George Clooney and Jean Dujardin, the beginning of a great friendship
George Clooney’s fifth feature film, Monuments Men, is inspired by a true story. If the operation mentioned in the film really existed, the names of the soldiers were changed for adaptation. The script is also inspired by the work Monuments men Published in 2009 by Robert M. Edsel.
George Clooney, who is the director, producer and co-writer of the project, is also the main actor. Next to him is a certain Jean Dujardin, who just won an Oscar for Best Actor (The Artist). After this shoot, the two men maintained a great friendship and also became the faces of a famous coffee brand with Camille Cotin.
The film also stars John Goodman, Bill Murray and Hugh Bonneville, as well as Matt Damon. The latter, a constant employee of George Clooney, briefly replaced Daniel Craig, who was forced to leave the project due to a busy schedule. Finally, Cate Blanchett plays the main female role in the film. An insignificant role, which the latter still manages to make remarkable.
The film’s casting alone is worth watching
Released in France on March 12, 2014, Monuments Men attracted more than 1.3 million theatergoers. A public success that compensated for a very mixed critical reception. George Clooney’s film failed to win over much of the press or the general public (AlloCiné internet users give it an average rating of just 2.5 out of 5).
Of course, Monuments Men is not a great war movie, and it never claimed to be. A tribute to the great Hollywood ensemble films, this feature film shines a light on a little-known story of World War II. Its XXL casting also made it possible to fill in the gaps of an overly conventional and insufficiently original script.
Monuments Men will leave its catalog of films available on Netflix on September 6.
