Twitter creator’s social network becomes ‘Brazilian app’ after STF decision against platform renamed X by Elon Musk
Bluesky, the social network created by Jack Dorsey, one of the founders of Twitter, has seen significant growth in recent days with 1 million new users, following the suspension of X (formerly Twitter) in Brazil, decided by the Minister Alexandre de Moraes of the STF on Friday (8/30). The platform’s application has become the most downloaded in Brazil and the company celebrated the feat in a post: “Brazil, you are setting new records for activity on Bluesky!”.
In other posts, the company’s official profile commented: “Wow… welcome ONE MILLION new users in the last three days!!! Now this is a Brazilian app.”
Quick response to X block
The suspension of X/Twitter has led thousands of Brazilians to look for alternatives, with Bluesky being the primary option. The app has quickly become the download leader in the “social networking – free apps” category on the App Store and is battling Threads for supremacy on the Play Store.
Bluesky History and Independence
Bluesky began as a project by Jack Dorsey in 2019, while he was still CEO of Twitter. In 2022, the partnership between the two platforms was dissolved and since 2021, Bluesky has operated independently, under the leadership of Jay Graber. By May 2024, the social network had already more than 6 million users.
Provocation and adaptation
With the STF’s decision, Bluesky did not miss the opportunity to provoke X, publishing an image of empty shelves with the caption: “This is what a social network would be like without Brazil.” In addition, the platform launched a guide in Portuguese to orient new Brazilian users.
Brazil, you are setting new all-time highs for activity on Bluesky! 🥇
