Starting tomorrow, fans of Adrian Monk (Tony Shahubi) will be able to see a TV movie that marks the big return of the famous detective. Aired on USA Network from 2002 to 2009, the series of the same name ended after eight seasons.
A real success! As atypical as it is charming, it must be said that Monk remains unforgettable. After more than 15 years, the cast reunites to offer one last investigation to fans of the TV show. But before you discover this new chapter, let’s go back to the last episodes of the series to refresh your memory.
Split into two parts, the finale allowed Monk to solve an investigation that had haunted him for 12 years: the death of Trudy (Melora Hardin), his wife. Then we find ourselves dropped back in time before the Christmas holidays are in full swing. If Adrian is particularly happy, Trudy seems to be busy.
Despite everything, she gives it to her husband and asks him not to open it right away, which is very difficult for the detective, obviously very interested in discovering his surprise. While the two lovers share a tender moment, Stottlemeyer (Ted Levine) interrupts them. They have a new case to solve.
For her part, Trudy is still worried. And her anxiety is justified, as she’s been followed by an unknown figure in her parking lot ever since. A few minutes later, tragedy happens: her car explodes, the young woman dies instantly.
By this time, Monk does not know anything and begins to investigate. A midwife has gone missing and a duo of investigators try to find out what happened by interrogating the doctor. However, they quickly come to a halt when Stottlemeyer learns of Trudy’s death.
Back to the present Adrian falls asleep and receives a visit from his dead wife. He tells her that soon he will be able to sleep in the middle of the bed, that it won’t take long. A sign that takes Monk by surprise.
While he discusses this with Natalie (Traylor Howard) on the street, he is stopped when he discovers that something has happened again at the famous maternity hospital. Indeed, the doctor who was questioned at the time was found dead.
Everyone is a bit shocked to find themselves in the exact same place after so many years. Although disturbed, Monk does not lose his good manners and quickly discovers clues that lead him to the killer.
After a quick visit to the judge to get an arrest warrant against the offender, Adrian heads over to Natalie’s house for dinner. But what he doesn’t know is that a federal court judge is in league with the killer who killed the doctor.
Worse was the one who killed his wife. Determined not to get caught, he asks the same man to finish off Monk. Quickly manages to poison our beloved hero with a synthetic toxin that will kill him within hours unless we can find his exact origins.
The countdown has begun for the entire team. But it’s more difficult than anyone imagined. Their only solution is to find the person so that they can name the molecule used for them.
Stottlemeyer eventually found him at the station. Then a chase begins between the cop and the killer. But before he is about to be arrested, the man is hit by a train. Therefore, any hope of finding an antidote disappears.
Bad news, because Monk is lost. Frustrated, he prefers to die and decides it’s time to open Trudy’s present – which he never opened, preferring to keep the secret intact – and finds the cassette.
A video shot by her husband reveals the whole truth: Trudy was having an affair with a then-married law professor. She got pregnant and she did everything to keep it from becoming a story. The baby died nine minutes after birth and the father is none other than Ethan Rickover (Craig T. Nelson), who has since become a federal judge.
Monk falls from the heights when he learns all this, but swears to avenge his dead wife, he soon realizes that Ethan is responsible for his death. He immediately confronts Rickover, but the latter admits nothing. Meanwhile, Adrian’s condition worsens. However, the hatred he feels drives him to fight and even get a little better.
But something torments him: why did he kill Trudy to cover up a simple adventure? He thinks and remembers the time spent in the judge’s house. His wife said he would never leave his property. So why does Monk care?
Ready for anything and with nothing left to lose, she walks up to Ethan and points a gun at him to force him to dig in his garden. If the police come and think he’s crazy, we quickly find out they were right because a body is found.
This is the midwife who died 12 years earlier and who helped give birth to Trudy. She was going to tell the police everything and no longer supported his complicity in this case.
Seeing that he is trapped and his guilt against the Doctor, who has also discovered evidence against him, he grabs Monk’s gun and kills himself after only saying, “Protect her!”
Still troubled by the two words, Monk tries to move on, but a television report reveals that Trudy and Rickover’s daughter is, in fact, still alive. Stottlemeyer finds it. Molly (Alona Tali) is 25 years old and really wants to meet Monk.
The detective rediscovers the joy of life in her company and fights his OCD even harder to spend time with her. The final episode ends with Molly and Monk walking on the beach and discussing Trudy.
Here you are, ready to discover the return of Monk. What will happen during the final investigation of our favorite investigator remains to be seen. See you on September 4 at 9:10 on TF1!
