Fires continue in Brasilia National Forest; firefighters resume work today (4)

The suspicion is that the fire was started deliberately, as three people were seen on the spot, according to the Chico Mendes Institute for the Conservation of Biodiversity. The Federal Police is investigating the case.

The fire that has been raging in the Brasilia National Forest (Flona) since Tuesday morning (3) continued throughout the night and early morning. Early Wednesday morning (4), firefighters resumed fighting the flames.

Flona has an area of 9 thousand hectares and is part of the Brasilia National Park, which has 48 thousand hectares.

Fabio MirandaFlona chief, said in an interview with TV Globo that the fire has decreased compared to the one recorded on Tuesday, but it is not yet possible to say that the fire is under control.

The fire in Flona could be criminal

The suspicion is that the fire was started deliberately, since three people were seen on the spot, according to the Chico Mendes Institute for the Conservation of Biodiversity (ICMBio). The Federal Police (PF) is investigating the case.

The park was closed after three fires were detected by firefighters. By the end of Tuesday night, the burned area already amounted to 1,200 hectares, the equivalent of 1,200 soccer fields. Among the affected areas are important water sources for the supply of the population of the Federal District.

“It was an atypical day. Lowest humidity in history, very high temperature, winds that were constantly changing direction. It was a very difficult fight. Maybe we believe that this fire was intentional because several fires broke out at the same time, which increased the difficulty and trapped our teams”Miranda told TV Globo.

DF without rain

It hasn’t rained for 134 days in the Federal District (DF). The last rain recorded by Inmet was on April 23. The relative humidity of the air dropped to 7% this Tuesday, at 4:00 p.m., in the Gama region. This is considered, according to Inmet, the driest day in the history of DF.
