President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Thursday asked parliament to confirm First Deputy Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha as Ukraine’s new foreign minister at a critical moment in the war with Russia.
Sybiha’s appointment, which parliament is expected to approve later on Thursday, is part of the biggest shake-up in Ukraine’s government since the war began in February 2022, with Zelenskiy saying the country needs “new energy”.
Parliament has already accepted the resignation of Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba. It has also approved the departure of two deputy prime ministers and several ministers in the past two days.
Sybiha, a career diplomat, worked for several years in Zelenskiy’s office, overseeing foreign policy and strategic partnerships.
Analysts said they do not expect any changes in Ukraine’s foreign policy. During the war with Russia, the foreign minister always came second to the president’s cabinet on many important foreign policy issues.
Zelenskiy is preparing to travel to the United States this month to present what Kiev has called its “victory plan” to U.S. President Joe Biden, a key ally.
He will also attend a meeting of the Ramstein Group of countries that supply weapons to Ukraine on Friday, German magazine Spiegel reported.
Zelenskiy has repeatedly called on allies to lift restrictions that prohibit Kiev from using Western weapons for long-range strikes against Russia.
Russian forces are advancing eastward and have stepped up a campaign of missile and drone strikes against Kiev and other Ukrainian cities far from the front lines, hitting the energy sector and other infrastructure with near-daily attacks.
