London, 21st century…Evie Hammond doesn’t want to forget anything about the man who saved her life and allowed her to overcome her deepest fears. But there was a time when all he wanted was anonymity to escape the all-powerful secret police.

Like all his fellow-citizens, too quick to obey, he accepted that his country had lost its soul and given itself en masse to the tyrant sattler and his followers. One night, as two “guards” prepared to rape her on a deserted street, Evie saw her liberator appear. And nothing was the same. His apprenticeship began a few weeks later under the tutelage of the mysterious “V”…

Released in 2006, V for Vendetta was brilliantly adapted from the works of Alan Moore and illustrated by David Lloyd. A work (published between 1982 and 1990) that incorporated highly political themes whose echoes are still widespread today: dystopia, anti-fascism, anti-nuclear, anarchism, authoritarianism, remote surveillance, media manipulation, state terrorism, civil. Obedience, corruption…

Thus, he posed the following question in a terrifyingly ambiguous way: How legitimate is the use of violence to overthrow a government that oppresses its people and deprives them of their most fundamental freedoms?

Fans of the graphic novel, the Wachowski sisters wrote an outline of the script in the 90s, but then they embarked on a Matrix adventure that took them ten years. During the post-production of the second and third parts of the cult trilogy, they wrote a new version of the script and directed the film to their first assistant James McTeague, who was making his first feature film here.

It doesn’t really matter that Alan Moore dissed the film, to the point of asking that his name not be in the credits (like all adaptations of his work). The director avoids the pitfalls by delivering a subversive and sultry blockbuster of the kind that Hollywood rarely produces, held at arm’s length by Natalie Portman and, above all, the extraordinary Hugo Weaving in the mask of V (mask more …).
