Kevin reveals that the first film’s box office failure impacted plans for Horizon 2
Kevin Costner addressed the cancellation of the theatrical release ofHorizon 2during a press conference at the Venice Film Festival. The actor and director stated that the studio’s decision was probably a reaction to the poor performance of the first film in the franchise.
It was not a smashing success.
Costner also explained that the initial idea was to release the second film six weeks after the first, but the decision was reviewed by the studio. He also revealed that, despite the setback, he was pleased to be able to show Horizon 2in Venice, which would be impossible if the film had already premiered in theaters.
For me, it fit into my plan, which was to always want to release films about five or six months apart. And that would allow me to come to Venice, because they wouldn’t show the film here if it had already been released.
The US release was initially scheduled for August 16, but was canceled after the performance of the first film, which had an estimated budget of $100 million but grossed only $11 million in its opening weekend.
Despite these challenges, Kevin remains optimistic and determined to continue with the franchise, which is planned as a series of four films, and highlighted that filming for the third film began in May of this year, and should end next year.
When something doesn’t work out, my desire to continue increases.
