Can Nicole Kidman go even higher? The star, an Oscar winner in 2003 for The Hours, never ceases to impress. This Saturday, September 7, she received the Volpe Trophy for Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival for her role in Babygirl. The erotic thriller, directed by Halina Rein, made a strong impression on the audience and critics, calling the actress’ interpretation “Sensational“.

With this honor, Nicole Kidman sets a record that few actresses have achieved before: she was awarded by three of the biggest film festivals in the world (Cannes, Berlin and Venice). Only Julianne Moore and Juliette Binoche have achieved this feat.

After the Silver Bear for her role as Virginia Woolf in The Hours in 2003, the Australian received a special prize at the 70th Cannes Film Festival. Actually, this is not an actual performance prize, but it still remains an important award for this anniversary edition.

Nicole Kidman affected by the tragedy

Nicole Kidman’s absence from Saturday night’s closing ceremony was much noted. Having already arrived at the place to receive the prize, the actor learned about the death of his mother and had to leave immediately. It was Halina Raine, the director of the movie Babygirl, who read her letter on stage:

I arrived in Venice today to learn that my mother, the brave and beautiful Janelle Ann Kidman, had just passed away. I am in shock and I have to go back to my family. But this prize is for him. He shaped me, directed me, and built me. I am extremely grateful to be able to speak his name through Halina. The intersection of life and art can be heartbreaking. I was heartbroken.”

Jury president Isabelle Hooper also had a few words for the star at the press conference, praising her award-winning performance.

Nicole Kidman currently stars in the Netflix series A Perfect Couple, which is number one on the platform.

“Babygirl” does not have a release date in France yet.
