The final episode of Season 4 marked the tragic fate of Max (Sadie Sink), one of the series’ fan-favorite characters. The heroine, determined to trap Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bauer), is attacked by a creature that manages to kill her in seconds. Billy’s sister is eventually saved by Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), who manages to keep her alive with her powers.
At first, the creators, Matt and Ross Duffer, thought to do their idea: kill Max. Which makes the end of Season 4 even darker. “For a while that was the planRoss Duffer reveals. Then, we finally chose this other solution. We wanted his fate to be more uncertain at the end of the season.”
He adds: “It’s very dark, and if Max survives, we don’t know much about it. We wanted to leave that question open for Season 5.” When Eleven and her friends visit her in the hospital, the young teenager is brain dead. Regardless, the character will return later, but how? This is a big question.
Co-creator Matt Duffer explains: “We wanted to lose the game against Vetsna no matter what. The main idea of season 4 was their failure. We wanted to introduce Vecna and win. This allows us to prepare our heroes for the final showdown of Season 5.”
