U.S. presidential candidates will participate in the only presidential debate scheduled until November
donald trump AND Kamala Harris will meet personally for the first time this Tuesday 10, at 9:00 p.m. (10:00 p.m., Brasilia time), the candidates for the presidency of the United States will participate in the only presidential debate scheduled until November, which will be held at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvaniaand is hosted by ABC News.
In her first presidential debate, this is Kamala’s biggest moment since the Democrat entered the race after her disastrous performance in Joe Biden node first debate in June. Former President Trump, the Republican nominee, will participate in his seventh general election debate since 2016.
Where to look?
ABC News, the host, will broadcast the debate in the United States. Other American broadcasters, such as CNN and CBS News, were authorized to broadcast simultaneously. In Brazil, the debate will also be broadcast on CNN Brasil and GloboNews. Anchor of World news tonightDavid Muir and the host of Firstfrom ABC News Live, Linsey Davis, will moderate the debate.
The debate will last 90 minutes.
In addition, candidates will have two minutes to answer questions and two minutes for rebuttals. They will also receive an additional minute for further explanations or clarifications. In particular, candidates will not be able to ask each other questions. Just like the last debate, there will be no audience.
Kamala and Trump’s Track Record
On the Democratic side, Kamala must reclaim her prosecutorial legacy and take a firm stance. Since the 2019 Democratic primary debate, Kamala has shown she can launch strategic strikes against figures like Trump, but she is sometimes less adept at unexpected moments.
On the Republican side, Trump, known for his animosity, is an unpredictable TV veteran who doesn’t need many minutes to deviate from his rehearsed script. “I’m going to let her talk,” Trump told voters earlier this month. “You can have all the strategies you want, but you always have to adapt to what’s in front of you.”
The first debate of 2020 was marked by Trump’s effusive behavior as he badmouthed Biden, alienating so many voters that his poll numbers dropped significantly afterward.
Trump knows he misbehaved in that debate and has acknowledged it privately, aides say. But his team still fears he won’t be able to contain his animosity toward Kamala. The last time he debated a woman was Hillary Clinton, his 2016 rival. He called her a “nasty woman” and harassed her onstage, but aides thought he was relatively calm by their standards.
The nadir of Kamala’s 2019 primary debate performance came when Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii demanded that she apologize for her past as California’s prosecutor — a moment Kamala’s campaign had prepared her for, but one she had yet to respond to effectively.
Immigration, Economy and Abortion
For this debate, Trump’s team is aiming to leave the public with the impression that Kamala is responsible for every negative aspect of Biden’s term, such as the high prices they pay at the supermarket, the wars in Ukraine and inside Middle East and undocumented immigrants crossing the border.
The Democrat has the delicate task of remaining loyal to Biden, but also of subtly distancing herself from him to show her own authentic campaign.
Trump is expected to revive the more liberal policy positions that Kamala espoused in 2019 during his first presidential campaign but has since stepped away from, including her call at the time to ban fracking, which is seen as a deadly issue in Pennsylvania, a crucial swing state.
Kamala should deflect these attacks by reminding voters what the country was like when Trump handed power to her and Biden and blaming Trump for pressuring Republicans to kill legislation to improve immigration and strengthen border security. The Democrat will likely go on the offensive on abortion, the policy area Trump sees as his greatest political vulnerability.
