Taylor Swift Supports Kamala Harris, Invites Fans to Vote

Singer used social media to endorse the Democratic nomination after a televised debate and warn of the dangers of misinformation

Pop star Taylor Swift took to her social media Tuesday night (9/10) to support Vice President Kamala Harris’ candidacy for US president. The singer, who has a huge fan base of over 280 million followers on Instagram, also took the opportunity to warn about the use of artificial intelligence to spread misinformation, including a deepfake that portrayed her as a Donald Trump supporter.

Donald Trump’s Lie

Last August, Donald Trump falsely suggested he had Taylor Swift’s support by sharing AI-generated images on social media that showed the singer and her fans supposedly supporting his presidential campaign. The images were fake. When questioned about the matter, Trump said he had no direct involvement in creating the images and that “other people” generated them, but he did not deny the false idea that the singer supported him.

Real Support for Kamala Harris

“Like many of you, I watched the debate tonight,” Swift wrote in a lengthy post after Tuesday’s presidential debate between Harris and Donald Trump. She encouraged her followers to research the candidates and issues that matter to them, stressing the importance of combating misinformation. “The easiest way to combat misinformation is with the truth,” she said.

Swift confirmed that she will vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 presidential election. “I will vote for Kamala Harris because she fights for the causes I believe in,” the singer wrote. “I think she is a talented and steady leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we lead with calm rather than chaos. I was very excited and impressed by her choice of running mate Tim Walz, who has been an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, in vitro fertilization, and a woman’s right to her own body for decades,” she added.

Appeal to the fans

“I did my research and I made my choice. Your research is yours, and the choice is yours,” she said. She concluded by asking her followers to register to vote, especially those who will be voting for the first time. “Remember, you have to be registered to vote!” Swift concluded.

In a humorous tone, she signed the message “Childless Cat Lady”, an ironic reference to an expression by JD Vance, Donald Trump’s vice-presidential candidate, who made misogynistic remarks towards childless women.
