Dune 3: Why will the final film be so different from the previous two?

Released last March, Dune: Part II established itself as one of the biggest critical and commercial successes of this year. In France, the film received more than 4 million viewers.

For the Warner studio, there is no question: the third part should see the light of day. An opportunity for filmmaker Denis Villeneuve to adapt another Frank Herbert novel, the messiah.

The work, published in 1969 and presented as a sequel to Dune, takes place twenty years after the events of the previous novel. It brings conclusions to the story of Paul Atreides, played on screen by Timothée Chalamet. in the interview Vanity FairThe director reveals that the last chapter is “He is currently writingAnd it will be very different:

It is important to understand that these two films were a diptych for me, it was an adaptation of the first book. It’s over now, it’s over. So the third one, which is currently being written, I would say that for me it’s a different object.

It’s almost not a trilogy, it’s strange to say, but I really want – if I come back – to do something different and with its own identity. Let’s say Messiah will be something new that I will approach with its cinematic philosophy.”

The last dune for Villeneuve?

Unless Denis Villeneuve fully confirms his involvement as director, there is little chance that the director will not return for a third time. In the rest of the interview, he confirms that whatever happens, Messiah will be his last film in the Dune universe.

I think it would be a good idea to make sure I plant the seeds in Messiah if anyone wants to continue because those are great books. Their adaptation is more difficult. They are becoming more and more esoteric. (…) I will not do it myself, but it may happen to someone else.

Will Messiah be Denis Villeneuve’s next film? Nothing is less certain. The director explains that he is working on three projects at the same time: an adaptation of a science fiction book Meeting with RamaMovie about Cleopatra and Dune: Messiah. “Let’s see what happens next.
