The feature film currently showing in Brazilian theaters is a remake of a film released in 2022. Discover the plot.
The terror “Don’t speak badly” is the main release of the week in theaters. The film with James McAvoy, Mackenzie Davis and Scoot McNairy is the American version of another film, the Danish “Gæsterne” (“Don’t speak badly”), released in 2022 and nominated in 11 categories of the Danish Film Award.
When the American project was announced, reactions were divided, but many were against the remake, believing that it was a project that would simply copy what the first film, by director Christian Tafdrup, had done. However, the two films end up differing, especially in the ending. But don’t worry, this text does not reveal any spoilers about the plot!
What is the story of the film?
In the plot of “Don’t speak badly”the Danish couple Bjørn (Morten Burian) and Luisa (Sidsel Siem Koch) is spending her summer holidays in Tuscany, Italy, with her daughter Agnes (Liva Forsberg). At some point they end up meeting a Dutch family: Patrick (Fedja van Huet), Karin (Karina Smulders), and little Abel (Marius Damslev), a boy close to Agnes’ age and born without a language. The Danish family soon accepts an invitation to spend the weekend in a country house with the Dutch, but strange and embarrassing situations begin to make them suspect that they are running serious risks.

The American feature film maintains a very similar structure. This time, the couple invited to the isolated place for the weekend is Ben (McNairy), Louise (Davis) and daughter Agnes (Alix West Lefler), while the hosts are Paddy (McAvoy), Ciara (Aisling Franciosi) and Ant (Dan Hough).
Why was the original version of the film successful?
Catapulted into curiosity after the uproar generated at the 2022 Sundance Festival, the Danish film was defined by the press of the time as “scary” and “transgressive”. According to the The Hollywood Journalist“Tafdrup suggests the paralyzing fear of offending, which can trap people into docile and obedient behavior, even in the most unpleasant situations,” he said, and said the film contains frequent hints of references to Michael Hanake’s “Gratuitous Violence.”
The portal IndieWire wrote that “on the surface, ‘Speak No Evil’ seems like a run-of-the-mill domestic drama, exhibiting influences from other caustic social satirists like Ruben Östlund and Maren Ade, who play with established ideas of masculinity and manners in our overly civilized society.”
Why is the ending of the original film considered macabre?

Without giving away any spoilers, the film has a daring and disturbing final sequence. The Danish family goes to great lengths to escape their hosts, but they are relentlessly pursued, leading to one of the most shocking and graphic endings seen in recent cinema. It’s a bold ending that will definitely stick with the viewer. Some critics say the American remake takes a different direction.
