“These vehicles are more convenient in terms of initial cost and maintenance, in addition to offering significant fuel savings”, underlines the Senatran research
In total, Brazil has 34.2 million owners of motorcycles, scooters and mopeds. Of these, 17.5 million are not qualified to fly them. This means that 53.8% simply could not ride a motorcycle. These astonishing numbers show the complex reality of the motorcycle universe in Brazil.
Of all those who have registered category A on their license, the vast majority (61%) do not own a motorcycle that they can call “their own.” In short: most motorcyclists do not have a license. And most of the qualified do not own a motorcycle. Senatran obtained the data through the National Registry of Motor Vehicles (Renavam).
According to the Secretariat’s study, the more than 34 million motorcycles represent 28% of the entire national vehicle fleet, which also includes light and heavy vehicles. This proportion is alarming and raises questions about traffic safety and regulation.
“When considering the annual registration of these vehicles, it is estimated that, in less than four years, new registrations of motorcycles and similar vehicles will exceed half of the total number of registrations made each year.” says the research. This indicates a continued growth trend in the use of these vehicles.
What factors contribute to the increase in motorcycle sales?
g1 has gained access to new motorcycle registration data for the past five years, and the Senatran study’s motorcycle sales forecast points to even more exponential growth. Let’s take a look at the latest numbers:
- 2019: 530,034 units
- 2020: 350,141 units
- 2021: 517,154 units
- 2022: 636,565 units
- 2023: 780,070 units
- 2024: 933,158 units
In the first six months of 2019, 530 thousand motorcycles were registered. Half a decade later, considering the same interval, 933 thousand units were registered, with a leap of 76%. These data show a lively and growing market.
Impact of the pandemic
There was a decline in sales during the pandemic, when factories had to reduce or stop production altogether. But the sector has come back, giving even more prominence to two-wheelers. This scenario has encouraged the demand for motorcycles.
Furthermore, the preference of motorcyclists for these vehicles due to economic factors also played a crucial role. “These vehicles are more affordable in terms of initial cost and maintenance, as well as offering significant fuel savings”highlights Senatran research.
