If you have a Netflix subscription and haven’t seen Blue Jay, you definitely need to fix that! Released in a limited number of theaters in the United States in 2016, the work will be broadcast on October 24, 2022 on the streaming platform. This movie starts out as a rather banal romantic comedy, but it will surprise you by the end!

Sensitive and attractive work

Directed by Alex Lehman, Blue Jay is a black-and-white gem written by Mark Duplass, who also plays the title character, Jim Henderson. The latter returned to his hometown in California to renovate and sell his late mother’s house.

While walking through a supermarket, he accidentally meets Amanda, played by Sarah Paulson (American Horror Story, Ratched). The young woman is his childhood sweetheart when they were in high school. They greet each other politely, but do not go any further. A little later, the two ex-lovers meet in a parking lot and decide to go for a drink at a local cafe, the Blue Jay.

Amanda reveals to Jim that she is married to Chris, a much older man. In turn, Jim went to work for his uncle John’s company, specializing in the construction of houses in Tucson. The couple then begins to reminisce about the good old days, slowly uncovering drama that will derail their reunion.

Get tensed and question your existence

Sensitive and captivating, Blu-jay will ultimately charm, enchant and question you as its various themes are handled so well, the film especially benefits from the excellent finesse of the writing.

Everything is interpreted with brilliant and sincere precision by the duo Mark Duplass and Sarah Paulson. The couple is absolutely perfect, both in silences and dialogues, gestures and scenography.

Note that the Blu-ray was shot in just 7 days in Crestline, California. Give in to the temptation and give this little piece of junk a chance! Moreover, this story has a universal scope and can only touch your heart, especially if, like the protagonists, you have never recovered from your youthful love.
