Controversial Donald Trump Biopic ‘The Apprentice’ Gets National Trailer

The film stars Marvel star Sebastian Stan, and lawyers for the former US president have tried to block its release

Diamond Films has released the domestic trailer for “The Apprentice,” an indie drama starring Sebastian Stan (“The Falcon and the Winter Soldier”) as a young Donald Trump.

The film by Iranian Ali Abbasi, director of the award-winning “Border” (2018) and “Holy Spider” (2022), traces Trump’s rise to power through what is described as a “Faustian bargain” with influential right-wing lawyer and political operator Roy Cohn (played by Jeremy Strong, from “Succession”). The preview highlights Cohn’s rules for Trump to do well, including “doing whatever it takes to win.”

The screenplay is by Gabriel Sherman, author of the book “The Loudest Voice in the Room”, which was the basis for the miniseries “The Loudest Voice – The Roger Ailes Scandal” (2019), and follows Trump as he builds his royal estate business in New York in the 1970s and 1980s. The production portrays the beginning of the Trump dynasty and deals with themes such as power, corruption and lies.

The film contains graphic scenes, including the alleged rape of Ivana Trump by the businessman and a disgusting liposuction sequence, which sparked intense reactions at the world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival and prompted the former US president’s lawyers to try to block the film’s release in the country. The portrayal of the billionaire, addicted to diet pills, is deeply unflattering.

The cast also includes Maria Bakalova (“Death Death Death”) as Ivana Trump and Martin Donovan (“Tenet”) as Fred Trump Sr.

The premiere is scheduled for October 17 in Brazil, a week after its release in the United States.
