Corinthians defeated Fortaleza at the Arena Castelão, 2-0, this Wednesday. In the first leg of the quarter-finals of the South American Championship, the black and white team dominated the match and took the lead in the clash. They will now defend their lead at the Neo Química Arena, next week.

How did the match go?

The first half was frustrating for Fortaleza. Despite creating some dangerous chances, the visitors dominated. Láion had a full stadium, but they didn’t use this to their advantage and barely had the ball.

At times the game gave the impression that if the home team had pressed a little they would have opened the accounts. However, after 40 minutes, they were punished for their passivity. Igor Coronado received a free kick on the edge of the area and hit the corner, with no chance for João Ricardo and scored a beautiful goal.

The game resumes with Corinthians still in control. Just 5 minutes later, Coronado invades the area from the left, hits a cross and Talles Magno, with a cart, arrives a little late and sends it out, without a goalkeeper.

At 9, Juan Pablo Vojvoda made three changes, aiming to make the team more offensive. However, the changes had no effect. In the 22nd minute Coronado crossed again for Talles Magno. This time the striker took a great shot, forcing João Ricardo to make a great save.

Even with the score negative and playing in a packed Castelão, Fortaleza did not attack, much less push for an equaliser. The first shot on target came only in the 32nd minute, with a header from Tinga after a quiet save from Hugo Souza.

At the end of the match, Yuri Alberto collected a rebound from Matheuzinho’s cross and, at first, increased Coringão’s lead, which put one foot in another semi-final this season.

The performance of the Northeasterners is worrying, especially if we add the sequence of four games without a win. On the other hand, the black and white team is ahead in next Thursday’s match and gains morale for the fight against relegation of the Brasileirão.

The sequence

The two teams will return to the field on Saturday, for the national championship. Tricolore hosts Bahia at 21:00. Timão will face Atlético Goianiense, also at home, at 16:00.
