The Ministry of Justice and Public Security blocked 675 websites and 14 illegal streaming applications in an operation this Thursday 19. This is the seventh phase of Operation 404. According to the Ministry, the action is part of an international mobilization, involving several authorities, against copyright infringement.

The name of the operation refers to the “Error 404”, which occurs on the Internet when the user tries to access a page, which is not found.

In addition to removing websites and apps, audio, video and gaming content were also removed from servers and de-indexed by search engines. Social media pages and profiles were also deleted.

Thirty search and seizure warrants were executed and five people were arrested. The suspects are suspected of distributing pirated content on websites and digital platforms, a practice that “causes significant damage to the economy and the creative industry, as well as violating the rights of authors and artists.” The main impact of this type of piracy is on the cultural and creative sector, but the damage goes far beyond that.

In another recent anti-piracy operation, officers noted that the same websites that distribute illegal content also spread viruses and malware, leaving users’ computers vulnerable to data theft and other types of cybercrime.

International action

The operation was coordinated by the Computer Operations Laboratory of the National Secretariat of Public Security, attached to the ministry. The warrants were carried out by the civil police of nine states: Espírito Santo, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Paraná, Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul and São Paulo.

The public ministries of São Paulo and Santa Catarina also participated.

Organizations from five other countries also participated: Argentina, United Kingdom, United States, Peru and Paraguay. National and international artistic and copyright organizations were also involved.
