Coach Artur Jorge held a press conference after Botafogo beat Sao Paulo on penalties to advance to the Libertadores semi-final
Botafogo and Sao Paulo fought an electrifying duel on Wednesday night (25) in the second leg of the Libertadores quarter-finals, at Morumbis. The two teams were tied 1-1 in regulation time and the place was decided on penalties, where the Glorioso beat the Tricolore 5-4 and qualified for the semifinals of the competition. Coach Artur Jorge highlighted the players’ desire to face the match.
— This is a very fair victory for Botafogo. We came here with enormous courage and I told my players that there are no stories without courage, and today we add another page to the history of Botafogo. We did it with skill, with great attitude and commitment. I am the one who shows the way, but I am happy to have this group of men at my disposal. And they are responsible for these great achievements, for what we have achieved and how we behave with a competitive attitude and desire to win.
The coach also spoke about the goal conceded at the end and the penalties.
— We saw Botafogo being “fire” and we got what we wanted. We decided on penalties, unfortunately in the end we conceded a goal. We had the chance to score more goals, we only scored one, but we had the coolness, the serenity and the competence to be superior and be again, more than 50 years later, in a semi-final of an international competition.
Asked about the lack of intensity in the second half of the match, the Portuguese coach said he disagreed.
— I disagree. Maybe we were even too intense. We played a very consistent game, very competent and deserved for the dedication of the players and the way they commit themselves in every game.
Botafogo now awaits the winner of the duel between Flamengo and Peñarol this Thursday (26) to find out who will be their opponent in the semi-final of the Libertadores.
