Comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS, nicknamed the “comet of the century”, makes its closest approach to the Sun this Friday (27). If it maintains its intense brightness, the chances of observing it from Earth remain favorable, according to the Earth Sky website. Astronomers around the world are optimistic that it can be seen with the naked eye.
“This comet will be visible, with the aid of binoculars and possibly with the naked eye, in the dark skies in the last week of the month, when it will pass through the constellation of Sextants, towards the east”, explains the guide of the Valongo Observatory, near UFRJ.
The guide also highlights that the comet’s closest approach to Earth, approximately 71 million kilometres, will occur in the early evening of October 12. During this period it will be possible to observe it better, especially with binoculars, as it crosses the constellations of the Serpent and Ophiuchus.
According to NASA, C/2023 A3 is a periodic comet, similar to the famous Halley, and was discovered in early 2023.
What are comets?
Comets are made up of dust, frozen gases, ice and rocks, originating from the creation of the Solar System. As they get closer to the Sun, these materials begin to heat up, releasing gas and dust that create the iconic tail, typical of comets.
How to observe:
- The comet has been visible since September 15;
- It is preferable to observe it early in the morning, before dawn;
- Direction: look east;
- The use of binoculars or telescopes is recommended;
- To make it easier to find the comet in the sky, astronomy apps such as Star Walk 2 and Sky Tonight can be useful.
Is the comet’s approach dangerous?
The answer is no, because, despite its proximity, the comet does not pose a danger of collision with the Earth. At its closest point, the celestial body will be about 70.6 million kilometers from our planet. Read more here.
