To celebrate World Rock and Roll Day this Wednesday, July 13, check out 10 movies with lots of rock and roll

One of the most famous and beloved musical styles by the public, rock and roll was born in the United States in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Soon, it became part of popular culture and began to be a way of life. No longer restricted to the music industry, rock began to be portrayed in clothes and even in cinema.

This Tuesday, July 13, is celebrated the World Rock and Roll Day. With that in mind, the Rolling Stone Brazil selected seven rock movies we love, such as Rock of Ages (2012), almost famous (2000) and more. Check out:


Rock of Ages: The Movie (2012)

With Tom Cruise, Russell Brand and Catherine Zeta-Jones in the cast, Rock of Ages: The Movie (2012) was a success in the cinema by portraying the life of Drew (Diego Boneta) and Sherrie (Julianne Hough). The story takes place in Hollywood during the 1980s, as the two seek to fulfill their dreams to the sound of rock and roll.


School of Rock (2003)

Directed by Richard Linklater, School of Rock (2003) tells the story of Dewey Finn (Jack Black), musician who, after being fired from the band, starts working as a teacher. He quickly endears himself to the students, and so they team up to form a band, but without their parents’ permission.


The Runaways – Girls of Rock (2010)

The Runaways – Girls of Rock (2010) became a classic by showing Joan Jett (Kristen Stewart) and her dream of putting together an all-female rock band. Even with life’s challenges, he manages to achieve fame in Los Angeles alongside Cherrie Currie (Dakota Fanning) and the entrepreneur Kim Fowley (Michael Shannon).


almost famous (2000)

almost famous (2000) became a movie classic by mixing music, rock bands, rolling stone and many references to the 1970s. The film tells the story of William Miller (Patrick Fugit), 15 years old, having the chance to make his dream come true: accompanying the band’s tour stillwater as a journalist. With a talent for writing, he is noticed by the Rolling Stone USA. So, she embarks on a journey to talk about the rock group, meeting new people and antagonizing her mother.


Record Empire, A Very Crazy Store (1995)

with direction of Allan Moyle and starring Liv Tyler, Record Empire, A Very Crazy Store (1995) introduces us to a group of young people who work in the record store Empire Records. Now they need to help the owner keep the business going, but just raising more money might not be enough.


Bohemian Rhapsody (2017)

Bohemian Rhapsody (2017) is a biographical drama which portrays the life of one of the biggest names in music: Freddie Mercury. Besides him, the film tells the story of the members of the queenas Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon. Over time, the band needs to learn to deal with the vocalist’s excesses and the success achieved by the group.


The Rock Pirates (2009)

In The Rock Pirates (2009), friends notice how the radio BBC broadcasts less than an hour of rock music a day, so they decide to create a pirate radio station to spread rock and roll culture. With that, they begin to be successful and manage to reach the mark of 25 million listeners daily.


We are the Best! (2013)

Bobo and Klara are two teenagers who love punk rock and despite having no talent, they decide to form a band and invite Hedvig, a religious girl who plays acoustic guitar. We are the Best! shows the lives of these teenagers in 1982 dealing with coming-of-age issues and family issues with all the energy and poise of punk rock!


The Doors – The Movie (1991)

Jim Morrisona 1960s film student in California, forms the rock band a The Doors. The film shows his successful trajectory and his taste for drugs, until his tragic death in Paris in 1971, at just 27 years old.


Sid & Nancy – Love Kills (1986)

Sid Vicious, bassist for the band Sex Pistols, had a very troubled relationship with his girlfriend Nancy Spungen. The film is based on real events and tells the life story of the former English punk youth idol with his girlfriend. The scandals and the way of life à la “sex, drugs and rock’n’roll” resulted in the early deaths of both.
