nine million. This is the number of viewers who watched the first episode of Agatha All Along when it aired on September 19. This is the latest Marvel series from Disney+ and follows the famous witch played by Kathryn Hahn and her Sabbat. Relatively average when compared to other shows like The Acolyte (11 million views), but more than enough for Disney+ if we’re to be believed. Forbes.
Indeed, Agatha All Along is to date the cheapest series ever produced by the platform. If the latter did not disclose the exact figure, the American media agree that it cost about 30 million dollars. A far cry from the $180 million investment in Star Wars The Acolyte. And when we do the cost/view ratio, then we can say that the most evil wizard of Marvel managed to enchant the subscribers.
Low budget and great decor
But how did the Agatha team manage to produce a quality series with such a small budget? Keyword: Limit the use of green backgrounds and special effects. The Marvel series is going back to the classics, as showrunner Jack Shaffer told us in an interview:
“Agatha is a more chaotic series than WandaVision (which he also worked on, editor’s note). We had to set limits and be disciplined about not spending too much money. But the peculiarity of this series is that it is shot in a real environment. This allowed us to have a cohesive world.”
In the promo video above, the cast, producers, and tech crew talk on-screen about how they were able to bring the WandaVision spin-off to life while maintaining the same premise: each episode is different and honors a time. “Similar series does not exist on television” Aubrey Plaza, Rio Vidal’s interpreter, tells us, and we want to believe him.
From the witches’ route to the monsters that Agatha and her coven encounter along the way, as well as the mercenary miniatures, everything was created by the teams. And it will appear on the screen. Less fluff, less incomprehensible special effects that have become commonplace at Marvel and pushed VFX teams to their limits… La Maison des Idées made the right choice here, and we hope it continues that way.
Agatha All Along is an episode every Thursday on Disney+.
