Rafael Paiva regrets the stumble at home: “We weren’t calm”

Vasco concedes an early goal, tries to equalize against Juventude and plays with one less in the final minutes

The dream of a place in the Libertadores in 2025 seems increasingly distant for Vasco. After drawing with Juventude, this Saturday (5), in São Januário, Cruz-Maltino completed four games without a win in the Brasileirão and distanced himself from the G-6. Coach Rafael Paiva regretted the goal conceded at the start of the match and the lack of calm to get the result.

“The match didn’t go well. We were clear that we had to win this match. We can’t bet on the third match in a week. We tried to mix up the players so as not to lose balance, but we conceded a goal too early and we didn’t have the tranquility of playing. No, we controlled the match as we wanted”, complained the coach.

The match started lively. Edson Carioca opened the scoring for Juventude, after three minutes, and Payet equalized for Vasco, after ten. The match was back and forth, with chances on both sides, but the Rio Grande do Sul team dominated the action after Souza was sent off in the 38th minute of the final phase. In fact, the midfielder remained on the pitch for just four minutes. In the end all that remained was to defend the result and secure a point.

A winless streak brings Z-4 closer

In ninth place with 37 points, Vasco is far from the relegation zone. However, the risk still exists, even if remote. Despite being in the top ten, Cruz-Maltino is closer to the Z-4 than the G-6, for example. The distance for the attachment is eight points, while for the Libertadores zone it is nine. Coach Rafael Paiva has raised the alert.

“It’s a cruel championship. When you don’t score it starts to bother you. But it’s cruel for everyone. It’s a very tough championship and we’re clear that we have to score as quickly as possible to avoid ending up down there. We have to score to get away from where we need to escape and think high,” the coach warned.

With the draw, Vasco reaches 37 points and occupies 9th place in the Brasileirão. Gigante da Colina returns to the field on the 16th, at 9.45pm (Brasilia time), against San Paolo, at Morumbis, for the 30th round.
