Al Pacino reveals near-death experience in 2020: ‘I didn’t see the white light’

Actor explained that he had complications due to Covid-19 and ended up without a pulse; memoir will be released in Brazil on October 15

Owner of a career that includes iconic performances such as Michael Corleone in The Godfather (1972) and Tony Montana in Scarface (1983), the American Al Pacino revealed that he almost died in 2020.

The information was detailed by him on the eve of the launch of the memoir Sonny Boywhich will be available worldwide from October 15th.

The actor told New York Times (via NME) that the near-death experience occurred due to complications resulting from Covid-19.

What happened was that I didn’t feel well. Not at all. So I had a fever, dehydration and all those things,” he said. “I was sitting in my house and then I left. It’s as simple as that. I didn’t even have a pulse.”

Al Pacino he explained that an ambulance was called and doctors treated him at his home. “They wore that outfit and looked like aliens. It was shocking to open my eyes and see that. Everyone around me saying, ‘He’s back, he’s here’.”

The actor was also asked about how the experience affected him and whether he experienced a “metaphysical ripple.”

I experienced it. I didn’t see the white light or anything else. There is nothing there”

He also stated that, with age and the passing of years, his perspectives on death changed. “It is the way it is. I didn’t ask for this. It just comes, like many things just come.”

Memoir

Sonny Boy will be published in Brazil by the publisher Roccowith translation from Laura Folgueira. The book is described as “a startlingly revealing account of a complete creative life” of “a man who no longer has anything to fear and nothing to hide.”

The work covers the childhood of Al Pacino in New York and studies in School of Performing Arts of the city, in addition to going through the actor’s trajectory in theater until reaching cinema successes.

It was an incredibly personal and eye-opening experience to reflect on this journey and what acting allowed me to do and the worlds it opened up. I’ve been a very lucky guy so far,” he said about the book.
