The former governor of Bahia and minister of Civil Housing saw ACM Neto’s União Brasil win six of the state’s main municipalities
BRASÍLIA – The Minister of Civil Housing, Rui Costa, passed through Salvador to devote his energies to the PT campaign in the metropolitan region and in the interior of Bahia and ended up suffering defeats in the main cities. In some of these cases, it saw its biggest adversary, former mayor ACM Neto’s União Brasil, emerge triumphant.
With the exception of Bahia’s capital, Rui has participated in campaign events in all of Bahia’s 10 most populous cities. The candidate he supported won only in two of them (Itabuna and Juazeiro). União won in six matches and PL in one (Porto Seguro). A definition is still missing for Camaçari, who has an even duel and has not had all the ballots counted.
The 10 most populous cities of Bahia are, respectively, Salvador, Feira de Santana, Vitória da Conquista, Camaçari, Juazeiro, Lauro de Freitas, Itabuna, Ilhéus, Porto Seguro and Barreiras.
Particularly noteworthy are the cases of Feira de Santana and Camaçari. In the first, the PT even chose Sidônio Palmeira, trader of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in 2022, but even so, the federal deputy Zé Neto (PT) saw the former mayor of Feira de Santana José Ronaldo (União), long-time ally of ACM Neto, wins in the first round.
Camaçari, the petrochemical hub city that gave birth to Rui and Senator Jaques Wagner (PT-BA), was considered one of the priority cities for the PT in these elections. The choice was made by former city mayor Luiz Caetano (PT). With more than 95% of the votes counted, he was behind Flávio Matos (União).
On the eve of the elections, Rui went to Campo Formoso for the last act of the campaign of Denise Menezes (PSD), wife of the president of the Legislative Assembly of Bahia, Adolfo Menezes (PSD). She was defeated by Elmo Nascimento (União), brother of federal deputy Elmar Nascimento (União-BA).
