Big win for Campos and Reis to run for governor

In contrast to the fierce dispute in capitals such as Sao Paulo and Curitiba, some mayoral candidates across the country managed to be elected in the first round with significant votes, confirming the favoritism indicated by polls since the campaigns began. Among the “champions” with almost 80% of valid votes, the results of Recife (PE) and Salvador (BA) stand out, with the re-election of João Campos (PSB) and Bruno Reis (União Brasil) respectively.

Still in the Northeast, the list of “champions” includes João Henrique Caldas (PL) – who obtained 83.25% of the 454,921 votes of Maceió (AL) and managed to get re-elected – and Eduardo Braide (PSD) – with 70.12% of the votes in São Luís (MA), which was also re-elected.

In Recife, with 100% of the ballots counted, Campos closed the elections with 725,721 votes, corresponding to 78.11% of the total valid votes. In second place is former minister Gilson Machado (PL), with 13.9%. Head of Tourism in the Bolsonaro administration, he failed to gain ground in the mayoral race.

Given his performance in the municipal dispute, Campos is now considered an option to run for governor of Pernambuco, in 2026, in a dispute against the current occupant of the office, Raquel Lyra (PSDB). The allies are also betting on him as the future name for the Presidency of the Republic.

At 30, Campos is part of a political clan that dominates the local scene. He is the son of former governor Eduardo Campos, who died in a plane crash in 2014, and great-grandson of Miguel Arraes, also governor of the state. Before being elected mayor in 2020, he was a federal deputy.

His great victory is a resource for the PSB and represents the hope of renewal of the party, which after redemocratization has failed to create national leaders capable of occupying the space of the left or center-left in the national debate. The mayor’s father, Eduardo Campos, made this attempt in 2014, but his death interrupted the plan.

In recent years it has become “pop” on social media, with videos of “dancing” and photos of “snowy” or bleached hair for Carnival.

Campos’ candidacy was also considered the most competitive of the left in the capitals. Despite having the support of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the mayor did not rely on the PT’s support to be re-elected.

Lula’s party was aiming for the position of vice president, with the aim of taking over the position of mayor after 2026, if Campos is elected governor. The mayor, however, ignored the calls of the PT members and chose Victor Marques (PCdoB), his former chief of staff, as his deputy.

In 2020, Campos was elected in the second round against Marília Arraes, her cousin, then a deputy of the PT and today is part of the Solidariedade team. The two broke up during the argument, but she ended up announcing her support for the mayor’s re-election this year.

CARLISM. In El Salvador, the electoral result also gave a special flavor to a group that has always had a strong presence in the political life of the state, Carlism. Bruno Reis obtained 78.67% of the votes in the first round, equal to 1,045 million votes. The runner-up, Kleber Rosa (PSOL), is far behind: with 10.43%.

This was the third time in a row that the group now led by ACM Neto won the elections in El Salvador in the first round, which demonstrates the broad support of Carlism in the capital. Antônio’s nephew Carlos Magalhães won in 2016 with 73.99% of valid votes. In 2020, Reis was the winner with 64.2% of valid votes.

With well-judged management, Reis will also have the challenge, over the next two years, of maintaining his popularity to make União Brasil’s plans to beat the PT at the state level viable, regaining power in Bahia. Since 2007, the state has been governed by members of the PT (first Jaques Wagner, then Rui Costa and now Jerônimo Rodrigues). With the undisputed victory in Salvador, União Brasil will look to gather strength to compete against PT again in 2026 for the state government.

In the campaign, Reis promised to qualify another 100,000 people. He also spoke about improvements in public transport, but rejected opponents’ proposal to introduce zero fares in transport, arguing that the city budget is not enough for this.
