British doctor admits trying to kill mother’s partner with fake Covid vaccine

A British doctor pleaded guilty Monday to a daring but failed plot to kill his mother’s partner with a fake Covid-19 vaccine, which involved forging medical documents and a disguise to inject poison into the victim’s body.

Thomas Kwan, 53, posed as a nurse and even took his mother’s blood pressure before administering the poison to her partner, Patrick O’Hara, in Newcastle, northern England.

O’Hara survived but suffered necrotizing facitis, a potentially fatal bacterial infection, after receiving the shot, according to prosecutors.

Kwan, a GP in Sunderland, pleaded guilty to attempted murder on Monday, shortly after his trial began last week, the court was told.

He had previously pleaded guilty to a charge of administering a noxious substance. Kwan will be sentenced on October 17.

Prosecutor Peter Makepeace told jurors on the first day of the trial Thursday: “Sometimes, perhaps occasionally, truth really is stranger than fiction.”

She said Kwan was concerned about her mother’s will, which stipulated that her house would be inherited by O’Hara if he was still alive when her mother died.

“Mr Kwan used his encyclopedic knowledge and research on poisons to carry out his plan,” Makepeace said.

“The plan was to disguise themselves as a community nurse, show up at Mr O’Hara’s address, in the home he shared with the defendant’s mother, and inject him with a dangerous poison under the guise of administering a Covid vaccine.”

Kwan checked into a hotel under a false name, used fake license plates on his car and disguised himself with a wig to carry out the plan, Makepeace added.

The UK Public Prosecutor’s Office (CPS) said O’Hara was injected with “an as yet unconfirmed toxin, which causes life-changing injuries”.

Christopher Atkinson, head of the CPS Complex Cases Unit for the North East, said: “Although the attempt on his victim’s life was unsuccessful, the effects were catastrophic.”

“Kwan could have helped the medical team by identifying this substance, but he made no comments to the questions posed to him during the police interrogation, allowing the victim’s health to deteriorate further,” he added.
