Director Joe Dante, creator of “Gremlins”, has accused the series “The Mandalorian” of having “blatantly” stolen and copied his character Gizmo in the creation of Grogu, Baby Yoda.
In an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle, he recalled that Gizmo “is essentially like a child”. Then she snapped, “Which brings me, of course, to the Baby Yoda thing, which is completely stolen and copied. Shameless, I’d say.”
Dante doesn’t think about the process, however, as the franchise is tied to producer Steven Spielberg and screenwriter Chris Columbus (the director of “Home Alone”).
As fans know, the original “Gremlins” told the story of Billy Peltzer (Zach Galligan), who receives a new pet, a cuddly mogwai named Gizmo, not realizing that if he didn’t follow the rules on how to treat him, it could unleash monstrous little parasites on the world. The film was released in theaters in 1984 and was so successful that it won a sequel, “Gremlins 2: The Next Generation”, in 1990.
Now, the franchise is about to get an animated series, overseen by Dante. The plot will go back in time to show Mr. Wing – the Chinese grandfather played in Keye Luke’s films – in his childhood in 1920s Shanghai, where he first meets the friendly Gizmo.
Produced by Warner Bros. Animation in collaboration with Amblin Television (Steven Spielberg) for HBO Max, the series will have 10 episodes lasting approximately 30 minutes and does not yet have a release date.
