Despite having debuted below expectations in the United States, Joker: Delirium for Twothe long-awaited sequel to the 2019 hit film, did well in Brazilian cinemas. In its opening weekend, the novelty, starring Joaquin Phoenix (Napoleon) and Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born), grossed R$20.43 million, guaranteeing the top spot at the box office.
The Christian drama The Forge: The Power of Transformation came in second place with R$6.07 million and Transformers: The Beginningthe prelude to the successful franchise, ended up in third place with R$1.3 million.
The Substance, Ghosts Still Have Fun: Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Lucky Strike in Paris and Despicable Me 4 occupied the next positions, respectively, but all with less than one million reais raised.
What is the story of Joker: Delirium for Two?
In Joker: Delirium for Twowhich is a musical, Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) is admitted to Arkham Sanitarium while awaiting trial for his crimes such as Joker. As he struggles with his dual identity, Arthur ends up encountering true love, in the form of Harley Quinn (Lady Gaga), and finds the music that has always been inside him.
In addition to Joaquin Phoenix, Zazie Beetz also returns in the second film as Sophie Drummondthe villain’s romantic interest in the first film. Among the new features, Lady Gaga is the main addition, but it also gains the company of Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees of Inisherin), Jacob Lofland (A Son), Catherine Keener (Run!), Ken Leung (Lost) and Harry Lawtey (The Pale Blue Eye).
