Police chase a koala at Sydney train station

A fleeing koala led police on a low-speed chase through a Sydney train station, video released on Tuesday showed, surprising passengers at the scene.

Provided by Transport for New South Wales, the video captures the koala walking through Casula station on Friday, about 34km south-west of the city’s central business district.

In the video, the koala checks out an elevator before choosing to go down the stairs.

Trains in the area were forced to slow down when the koala – a normally solitary species and one of Australia’s best-loved animals – came dangerously close to the edge of the platform.

The marsupial ended up jumping over the station fence after police were sent to chase it off the tracks.

“All passengers, large and small, are reminded to stay behind the yellow line,” Transport for New South Wales said in a statement.

Koalas are listed as vulnerable to extinction in the state.
