Among the cult action films of the nineties, Ian de Bont’s speed occupies a privileged place. The effectiveness of this blockbuster, driven by Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock, is based on a simple concept: a bus bomb will explode if its speed is less than 80 km/h.
This classic, which spawned a sequel in 1997, celebrates its thirtieth anniversary this year. Is part three possible? Nothing is less certain.
On October 8, director Ian de Bont, Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock gathered for a special screening at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood. The presentation was followed by a question-and-answer session, during which the Oscar-winning actor talked about the possibility of Speed 3.
“This will be the geriatric version– he says with humor in the comments The Hollywood Reporter. We wouldn’t go fast this time. But the first movie was made possible by this madman .
Today he is very gentle and kind and he is not the man I remember. But he was the one who combined ideas and energy, knew what the audience wanted and expected a lot from us. We had to play the game.“
Speed 3, doomed to failure?
He continues: “If Speed 3 does see the light of day, what will it be like to make full use of Jan de Bont’s genius? It took a lot of work and I don’t think we are brave enough and tolerant enough in the industry to make this film.
I could be wrong… If we can’t capture the genius of this director, then it will be a failure. I don’t know what we can do to live up to the public’s expectations..”
Sandra Bullock’s words for Speed 3 aren’t good, but at 60, Keanu Reeves continues to establish himself as a major figure in cinema thanks to the John Wick franchise.
Jan de Bont hasn’t made a film since 2003’s Tom Ryder sequel Cradle of Life, directed by Angelina Jolie. In addition to two speeds, we owe him the blockbuster Twister and the horror film Haunting with Liam Neeson and Catherine Zeta-Jones.
