In the tradition of Dark, three teenagers investigate the mysterious disappearance of their friend in this new series

Mysterious disappearances, a group of teenagers who lead the investigation and constant tension that does not lead to good… In a provincial town in Denmark in the late 90s, the TV series Nordland ’99 depicts its setting. Presented at the Séries Mania festival in 2023, this atmospheric thriller can be discovered exclusively on UniversCiné, a first for this format platform.

With its dark and gloomy atmosphere, but without the supernatural aspect, this novelty recalls the world of the German series Dark. “I wanted to make a detective series for the 15-year-old me” Screenwriter and director Kasper Møller Rask explains in an interview term.

“Our monster isn’t interdimensional, he’s human!”

Denmark, 1999. When Alex, a local teenager, disappears after a night out, his best friends Lucas and Chris and his sister Emma fear something is wrong. Their investigation to find her will reveal terrible truths about their small town. In this town where the sun never wants to show itself and where everyone knows each other without knowing each other, the trio struggles to find answers, but tirelessly continue their research at the risk of putting themselves in danger.

“I wanted to bring a classic horror story to a new generation while dealing with realistic issues. The central theme of Nordland ’99 explores the feeling of being an outsider in a small town where you don’t understand the people around you or your parents.” says Kasper Moller Rusk.

Young Lucas, a quiet and rather lonely teenager, maintains a difficult relationship with his father Christian, a local policeman who, aka Jim Hopper from Stranger Things, no longer knows how to keep in touch with his son after his death. of his wife.

In response to comparisons to the hit series Stranger Things, the director also highlights the difference in tone between the two shows: “The main difference is that our monster isn’t interdimensional, it’s human.” With Nordland ’99, it presents a story rooted in reality, despite the aesthetics and style typical of genre series and films.

“The series is created with the ambition to combine realistic themes with an engaging storyline to create a unique on-screen experience that can reach a wide audience.” He emphasizes.

Starring Elias Bude Christensen, Emilie Kroyer Koppel, Troels Lieb and Noah Risbro Hjerild, 8 episodes of Nordland ’99 are now available on the UniversCiné platform.
