The AFA decides that this year’s Argentine championship will not have relegation

The competition will have 30 teams next season

At a meeting of the Argentine Football Federation (AFA), the body decided that the current season of the Argentine championship does not include relegations. The same meeting re-elected Claudio Tapia for another term until 2029. She was the only candidate to run in the elections.

The meeting took place amid a legal dispute between the AFA and the Argentine government. The country’s Inspectorate General of Justice (IGJ) said that other issues, such as AFA’s financial reporting, could be discussed, but that any re-election of “Chiqui” would be invalid and could even be considered a crime. One of the key points of dispute between the two governments is the possibility of the country’s clubs becoming SAF, this measure is defended by Argentine president Javier Milei.

With the cancellation of relegation to the Argentine league, next season the competition will be contested by 30 teams: 28 teams from the current season and the two teams moving up from the second division.

Under the old rules of the competition, two teams would be relegated: the one ranked last in the overall standings and also the one with the worst season in the coefficient. As a result, Sarmiento and Independiente Rivadavia would be relegated to the country’s second division.
