Understanding the proposal put forward by a businesswoman who claims to own 80% of Vila de Jericoacoara

Tourist resort known for its paradisiacal beaches in Ceará has entered into a land dispute

The dispute over 80% ownership of Vila de Jericoacoara, one of Brazil’s most popular tourist destinations, was brought to light by businesswoman Iracema Correia São Tiago. She claimed ownership of much of the area in 2023, claiming to own the Junco I and Junco II farms, purchased in 1983 by her ex-husband.

After the divorce he kept this land, but only recently learned that the state had incorporated the area into public property. The news was released by the portal G1.

In its conciliation proposal, Iracema offered the Ceará government the areas already assigned to third parties, but wanted the rest to be ceded to it.

The State Attorney General’s Office (PGE-CE) has put forward a counter-proposal, guaranteeing that more than 90% of the land occupied by residents and businesses will remain under state control, allowing for the continuity of land regularization and the preservation of local activities. Only the unoccupied areas, registered in the name of the Institute of Agrarian Development of Ceará (Idace), would be assigned to the entrepreneur.

Despite the formalized agreement, the implementation was suspended for 20 days, as reported by PGE-CE this Friday 18. Residents, surprised by the negotiation, protested, demanding greater transparency and investigation by the Public Prosecutor of the State of Ceará (MPCE). .

The dispute also involves Jericoacoara National Park, as part of the areas claimed by Iracema overlap with this conservation unit.

There are cases in the Federal Regional Court of the 5th Region (TRF5) related to the expropriation of the Junco I and II farms, awaiting a court decision.

The businesswoman’s lawyers explained to the portal that she has no interest in interfering in the routine of the Vila and that the formal agreement with the State provides for the renunciation of the areas which, even within her property, are occupied. Iracema’s legal representatives also claim that she only claimed the land 40 years after purchasing it because she did not know that the government had carried out the harvesting process in the region.
