The American platform Peacock performed a gender change operation in “Dr. Death”. Exactly one year after the miniseries finished its full story, the platform announced its renewal for a second season.
Thanks to this order, the original miniseries is no longer a miniseries. It became the first season and the production became an anthology, with a reconfiguration to present a different history of medical crime each year.
“The first season of ‘Dr. Death’ surprised us as we delved into the terrifying and twisted minds of Dr. Christopher Duntsch and the team that set out to stop him,” said Lisa Katz, president of scripted content, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming. “The new installment of this highly compelling anthology series will explore a traveling surgeon who seduces the entire world of medicine,” she added.
While the first season focused on the case of Dr. Christopher Duntsch, who secretly acted as a serial killer on the operating table – earning himself the nickname “Doctor Death” -, the second will tell the story of Paolo Macchiarini, a charming surgeon known for his innovative operations which earned him the nickname “The Man of Miracles”.
When an investigative reporter approaches him for a story, professional ethics issues are addressed as he discovers how far Paul will go to protect his secrets. At the same time, a group of doctors on the other side of the world make shocking discoveries that put their “miracles” in check.
The initial plot was based on a podcast from website / producer Wondery, which inspired two other hit series: “Homecoming” on the Amazon streaming platform and “Dirty John” on the pay channel USA Network and Netflix.
Writer for the current first season, Patrick Macmanus became an executive producer on the second season. The script and the showrunner’s work were left to Ashley Michel Hoban, who produced the first season.
“Dr. Death” was made available in Brazil by the Starzplay platform.
