Thousands of years before Christ, on the island of Atlantis, a giant wave submerged the capital of the kingdom. While the residents try to escape the cataclysm, the queen of the city tries to protect her daughter and suddenly finds herself absorbed by a strange blue ray.
In 1914 Washington, D.C., a young cartographer and linguist named Milo Teach dreams of only one thing: to resume his search for his lost grandfather and find the famous Shepherd’s Scroll to go in search of the legendary Lost City. Royally ignored by his superiors, he is contacted one day by a mysterious millionaire who invites him to his palace and offers to finance all his projects.
- Tonight With The Family: Released 24 years ago, this Disney is a standout in the studio’s history.
From the creators of Beauty and the Beast
Even if it doesn’t quite reach the level it did at the Disney studio in the 90s, the next decade (in many ways more challenging for the Enchanted Kingdom) still contains some solid titles that are largely worthy of our attention.
This is especially true of Atlantis, the lost empire, which is not without flaws, but also full of qualities that would be a shame to take away. Directed by Kirk Wise and Gary Truesdale (the prestigious duo who have already produced Beauty and the Beast and The Hunchback), the company’s 41st animated classic is truly a true breath of adventure.
An epic journey with a breath of adventure
By 1:30 a.m., following in the footsteps of Milo and his merry teammates, we will cross the depths of the abyssal ocean, giant caves full of dangers, ancient lost temples and ancient vanished cities. Giant monsters and ferocious creatures will be there to offer an exciting archaeological journey, halfway between the novels of Jules Verne and the adventures of Indiana Jones.
The animation is sometimes criticized (considered too crude), Atlantis is still visually striking, especially due to the use of lighting and digital effects. Finally, let’s mention that if the trip is really worth it, it’s also the sumptuous James Newton Howard soundtrack that accompanies it.

What will you like…
- The film’s French voices, and especially those of Milo Tache, that Back to the Future fans should immediately recognize.
- The numerous adventure and action sequences, in particular the Leviathan attack, are spectacular.
What could be bothering them…
- Leviathan, really spectacular, but maybe a little scary for the younger ones.
- The villain Rourke and his monstrous transformation at the end of the film.
