Putin says he has a “good and friendly” relationship with Lula

In a recent press conference, the Russian president Vladimir Putin claimed to be maintaining a relationship “good and friendly” with the Brazilian president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The statement was made shortly after the BRICS summit, where Putin also addressed the Venezuelan situation, highlighting the differences between the positions of Russia and Brazil regarding the crisis in the South American country. The Russian leader expressed hope that Brazil and Venezuela could find common interests in future bilateral negotiations.

“I know President Lula as a very honest and very good person and I am sure that he – I know his positions of objectivity – will analyze this situation”Putin said.

The friendship between Putin and Lula was reaffirmed, even after the Brazilian president’s trip to Russia was canceled due to a domestic incident. During a telephone conversation, Lula asked Putin to convey a message to the president of Venezuela, Nicola Madurowithout, however, revealing details about the content of the message.

Venezuela’s interest in BRICS

The expansion of the BRICS bloc was a central theme during the summit, where the inclusion of new countries as possible “partners” was discussed. A preliminary list of 13 countries did not include Venezuela, although Nicolás Maduro said the country is already part of the group. Putin stressed that any invitation to Venezuela will be possible only through the consensus of current Brics members.

The political crisis in Venezuela continues to be a controversial issue on the international scene. The majority of the international community and the Venezuelan opposition do not recognize the results of the presidential elections of July 28, which gave victory to Nicolás Maduro with over 50% of the votes, as announced by the National Electoral Council (CNE). However, election records that would detail votes by table have not been made public.

On the contrary, the opposition, led by figures such as María Corina Machado, has published minutes that it claims to have received from party inspectors, which would indicate the victory of the former diplomat. Edmundo Gonzalez with almost 70% of the votes. Chavista authorities claim that these reports are mostly falsified, but have presented no evidence to support their claim.
