It was in the midst of this experience that one day Broyles was surprised to find a volleyball on the beach where he had been. Overwhelmed by his loneliness, he started talking to her and even came up with a name – Wilson – giving birth to one of the most iconic elements of his upcoming film.

To make this relationship even more authentic to the audience and to Tom Hanks on set, Broyles went so far as to write lines of dialogue for Wilson, allowing the actor to say them in his head while talking to the famous balloon.
