Not recommended for under 16s, this Netflix series is a hit despite the critics

Number 2 on Netflix, this series, which is not recommended for people under the age of 16, has become a hit on the platform since it was posted online about ten days ago. For mature audiences, fans of dramatic and sensual thrillers were catered for by this new African-American fiction.

We owe Beauty in Black to Tyler Perry, an American screenwriter and director who has already made Mea Culpa with Kelly Rowland for Netflix. The actor has excelled over the years in producing content created by and for the African-American community, across comedies and dramas.

What is “Beauty in Black”?

Not recommended for children under 16, Beauty in Black tells the story of the intertwined destinies of two strong and intelligent women trying to overcome a dangerous environment where anything goes. And yet, everything is against them.

On the one hand, Kim (Taylor Polidore Williams) is a stripper with a tragic family history who is struggling after a stint in prison. Mallory (Chrisle Stewart), on the other hand, is a businesswoman at the helm of a cosmetics company owned by her wealthy and dysfunctional brother-in-law, who harbors dark secrets.

After a series of tragic incidents, Kim and Mallory quickly realize that the people around them, which she surprisingly shares, don’t only want the best for them, and that they must do whatever it takes to survive.

Thriller, scandal, violence, sex and business are on display in this charming, gritty, extravagant and addictive series. But if you’ve already watched the 8 episodes of Beauty in Black that are available on Netflix, you know that they end with an open and shocking ending.

Addictive series, despite its flaws

Rated 3.1 out of 5, Beauty in Black has received mixed reviews from members of the AlloCiné community. User Flore Zoë (3/5) was disappointed with the Tyler Perry series:

“This series is going to create a stir among teenagers and adults, that’s for sure. But we’re at the extremes. The very poor doing bad things to get by, the very rich hating the poor. It’s awful, but hey, we want Cam to snap out of it and The script still manages to hold us back.”

On the other hand, Audemercier17 (1/5) is disappointed: “A plot that could have been interesting but takes a backseat in favor of mediocre dialogue, profane, as hollow as the characters…”.

“What’s the point of the series?”Jimmy even comes to question B (2.5/5). But as far as internet users are concerned, users of X (formerly Twitter) are taking the series with a lot of humor and appreciate the entertainment.

Despite questionable acting, an over-the-top plot, and actors who are “too pretty,” Netflix subscribers couldn’t help but watch Beauty in Black, which led to its No. 1 spot on Best Watch.

The sequel is coming… in 2025!

After this success on Netflix, which took the series to the top ten in 53 countries, the public is waiting for a sequel. And it’s ready! Beauty in Black is actually 16 episodes long, and so Tyler Perry’s fiction has been split into two parts.

The remaining 8 episodes will be released online in a few months, namely in the spring of 2025, as announced by the streaming service. Platform offers a small teaser for part 2 at the end of episode eight.

The first part of the 8-episode series “Beauty in Black” is available on Netflix.
