Actor known for productions such as Normal People (2020), Gladiator 2 (2024), All of Us Strangers (2023) and Aftersun (2022), Paul Mescal revealed that he doesn’t like it when someone calls films “content.”
During an interview with The Times to promote Gladiator 2which premieres on November 14, 2024 in Brazilian cinemas, Mezcal talked about the difference between art and content. “For the last few years, people have been talking about films as content. That’s a dirty word. It’s not ‘content,’ it’s work, dammit,” he said.
“I’m not being snobbish, but there are two simultaneous industries. One that works with a lack of care, artistic integrity. Go crazy, do things with Instagram followers as a factor, whatever,” the artist continued in the conversation.
But the other is what has always been there — the art of cinema — making, directing, lighting and designing the production. It keeps artists alive.
