Thousands of people have been ordered to evacuate as wildfires destroy homes in California

Thousands of people have received evacuation orders in Southern California as fast-moving wildfires have destroyed homes, authorities said, with the National Weather Service issuing a red flag warning describing the situation as “particularly dangerous” .

Video recorded by a witness showed residents struggling to leave their homes in the city of Camarillo as thick smoke covered the sky. The images also showed houses and cars completely engulfed in flames.

The fire has spread to about 5,700 acres, with at least 800 firefighters assigned to tackle it, said the Ventura County Fire Department, located northwest of Los Angeles.

At least two people were injured and several structures were damaged or destroyed by the fire in Ventura, fire officials said Wednesday.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom said the fire prompted evacuation orders for more than 10,000 people and threatened 3,500 structures.

Ventura schools remained closed until Friday due to the fires, according to the county school office.

The fire grew in size Wednesday after strong winds came into contact with very dry air.

The United States is experiencing a year of heavy fires, with 8.1 million acres burned to date, compared to a full annual average of about 7 million acres over the past decade, according to data from the National Interagency Fire Center.
