P20 Summit: Authorities ask parliaments for solutions to inequality

The 10th Summit of the Presidents of the G20 Parliaments (P20), held in the Chamber of Deputies, highlighted the urgency of common solutions to critical global issues such as hunger, inequality and the climate crisis.

During the opening event, this Thursday (7), leaders underlined the importance of collective and multi-sectoral actions to address these interconnected challenges.

The President of the Chamber, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), underlined the responsibility of deputies and senators in promoting measures that increase the presence of women in bodies of power. The information comes from Agência Câmara de Notícias.

Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG) said it is clear that global problems are of such magnitude that they require common solutions. “Similarly, today’s big issues cannot be understood in isolation”he stated.

Can parliaments contribute to sustainable development?

Sustainable development is a global challenge that requires the collaboration of different countries and segments of society. Tulia AcksonPresident of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, underlined the need for joint actions to address transnational problems such as hunger and inequality. He warned of increased social and economic vulnerability due to the 2023 climate crisis, which will affect a billion people.

Parliaments are essential components for overseeing and monitoring government actions, promoting transparency and stability. Policymakers are called upon to actively participate in achieving the sustainable development goals of the United Nations Agenda 2030, ensuring that all countries are aligned with these ambitious goals.

Importance of gender equality on the parliamentary agenda?

One of the central points discussed at the P20 Summit was the promotion of gender equality within parliamentary bodies. Tulia Ackson called for greater commitment from parliaments to make development more inclusive, stressing that gender equality is key to achieving these goals.

In an unprecedented action, the meeting of P20 women parliamentarians, held in Maceió, produced the “Alagoas Charter”, which aims to strengthen women’s presence and participation in these global discussions. Arthur Lira’s suggestion that future P20 presidencies include meetings of female parliamentarians in their agendas highlights the recognition of the importance of these initiatives.

Challenges and opportunities for Parliaments

Parliaments face the challenge of responding effectively to transnational crises affecting millions of people, exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic and the growing environmental crisis. The responsibility of legislators is not only to discuss, but also to implement policies that address these problems in an integrated way.
