Even if it is not an adaptation, “Sadness” is inspired by the comics: “Crossed”, created by Garth Ennis, to whom we owe especially “Boys” and “Preacher”.
Will there be a few boys and a preacher in sadness? Not at first glance, as Robert Jabazi’s Taiwanese feature won’t feature any overseas superheroes or pastors facing off against demons (despite the monstrosity of some of the infected). However, the latter admits that he was inspired by comics crossing.
Published between September 2008 and March 2010 in the United States, the title was created by Jacen Burrows and especially Garth Ennis, to whom we are indebted. Boys and preacher. And its title refers to the cross-shaped scar we see on the faces of people infected with a mysterious virus in this story set in a small town in the United States.
The parallel with Sadness is evident in that infected people don’t become zombies so much as ultra-violent and sadistic creatures who indulge their worst instincts. Like this scene from Robert Jabazz’s film, which, among other things, notably involves orbit. Cult in the US and relatively unknown in France, it’s available there from May 18 thanks to HiComics, crossing Described as a story “The most extreme and disturbing” Written by its author, as stated on the back cover.

Which, given its track record, says a lot about the content of this story being much more compact (and therefore intense) than, say, The Walking Dead. Backed by Jason Burroughs’ very graphic drawings reserved for the informed public, Garth Ann’s dark humor wreaks havoc with a mixture of nihilism and evil. Like Robert Jabazz in the movies, he doesn’t deny himself anything, whether it’s severed limbs, rape, or infected children attacking their mother while driving.
So Bloody Soul is on the screen. A sense of necessity too. Travel less, because the heroes of sadness do not have time to leave the city. But there are indeed similarities between the feature film and the comic from which it is inspired, so that the former does not seem like a transfer of the latter. And we think that if Robert Jabazz turns to superheroes one day, his main influence might be The Boys.
