Warning, the following lines contain spoilers for Astrid and Raphael Season 5 Episode 2. If you haven’t seen it yet, go ahead!
Astrid and Raphael’s Season 4 finale had its share of surprises for the two investigators. In the last minutes of episode 8, Rafael (Lola Devaer) found out she was pregnant with Nicolas (Benoit Michel). An unexpected pregnancy that destabilized the police officer.
Rafael has a miscarriage
In the first episode of season 5, which takes place two months after the events of the finale, Rafael, who prefers to sink into the negative, refuses a blood test to confirm the pregnancy.
Besides, he still hasn’t told the news to his partner. Finally, at Astrid’s insistence, she finally decides to inform Nico and confirm the pregnancy with a medical examination.
If two lovers are stressed but excited to learn they are going to be parents, their happiness is short-lived. At the end of the second episode, after falling down the stairs, Rafael has a miscarriage.
A few weeks ago, AlloCiné spoke with Alexandre de Seguins, the creator and screenwriter of Astrid and Raphael, to explain to us why the authors chose not to go through with this pregnancy.
It is a difficult choice
“There were many factors in our choice“, the screenwriter told us, who explained that sometimes the story goes in such an angle that the authors did not imagine when they started writing.
“In the first season, we killed Astrid’s guardian, who was the director of criminal records. And at the time we told ourselves we couldn’t do that because the character was great and allowed us to do so much.“
“He was a character and an actor that we were all attached to. But at one point our story was going in this direction. Once history took this direction, there was no going back.“.
And in the case of Raphael’s pregnancy, the authors originally had in mind that Raphael would give birth to his child. “Originally, at the end of season 4, we had the idea of having Rafaela with her son.
“Finally, in the writing of the episode and the dilemmas it posed, the story wrote itself and he took that direction.. We write stories, but every now and then, it’s a bit like writing a story.”
“And so it was in this case, because there was something very strong that suited Raphael’s character. And it was also very interesting to see what might come next for him, especially in his relationship with Astrid. It happened a little in spite of us.”
Watch the first two episodes of Astrid and Raphael this Friday 8 November from 21:05 on France 2. For those who are more impatient, the episodes are already available on france.tv.
